Stowe, Harriet Beecher

Harriet Beecher Stowe nasceu em Litchfield, Connecticut, em 1811. Em 1832, mudou-se com a família para o Cincinnati. A proximidade com o estado escravista do Kentucky fez com que a defesa da causa abolicionista fosse um valor crucial para o clã, pródigo em professores, líderes religiosos e reformadores políticos. Em 1836, casa-se com Calvin Ellis Stowe. Em 1843, Stowe publica seu primeiro romance, The Mayflower. Em 1852, ela publica seu grande sucesso, A cabana do Pai Tomás, o primeiro romance a criticar abertamente a escravidão nos Estados Unidos, com grande repercussão nacional e internacional. Stowe faleceu em 1896, em Massachusetts.
