Walker, Alice

Alice Walker é escritora, poeta e ativista, nascida no estado da Geórgia, Estados Unidos, em 1944. Devido ao contexto da segregação racial, estudou na única escola que aceitava crianças negras em sua cidade. Pelo excelente desempenho acadêmico, recebeu bolsa integral para a universidade, primeiro em Atlanta – onde integrou o Movimento pelos Direitos Civis –, e depois em Nova York, onde se formou. Trabalhou como professora de literatura no estado do Mississipi em períodos dos anos 1960 e 1970. Seu primeiro livro, Once, de poesia, foi lançado em 1968. Publicou em seguida diversas edições de contos e romances, entre elas A cor púrpura, em 1983, livro vencedor dos prêmios Pulitzer e National Book Award e adaptado para o cinema com imenso sucesso. Em busca dos jardins de nossas mães, lançado originalmente nos anos 1980, é seu primeiro livro de não-ficção publicado no Brasil.
