Okakura, Kakuzo
Kakuzo Okakura nasceu em Yokohama, no Japão, em 1862. Enquanto realizava seus estudos na Universidade Imperial de Tóquio, teve a oportunidade de conviver com o norte-americano Ernest Fenollosa, que se tornou um grande expoente na luta pela preservação da tradição cultural do país, ameaçada após a abertura realizada na Era Meiji, e exerceu forte influência sobre Okakura.Em 1890, Okakura ajudou a fundar a Academia Japonesa de Belas Artes. Posteriormente, foi também um dos fundadores do Instituto Japonês de Belas Artes e, em 1904, aceitou convite para colaborar com o Museu de Belas Artes de Boston, residindo nosEstados Unidos até pouco antes de sua morte, ocorrida no retorno a Tóquio, em 1913. Em 1906, escreve este O livro do chá, que o consagrou como um dos maiores defensores da cultura japonesa frente à invasão cultural do Ocidente. Além do presente livro, escreveu também The Ideals of the East (1903), The Awakening of Japan (1904) e The Heart of Heaven, este último publicado postumamente. Sua obra repercutiu mundialmente e teve impacto direto ou indireto em filósofos e artistas do porte de Martin Heidegger e Ezra Pound. |
