Nascido em 1809, em Boston, nos Estados Unidos, Edgar Allan Poe foi escritor, poeta, editor e crítico literário, mas sua fama se deu graças aos temas obscuros de suas obras. Desde a infância, teve a vida marcada por perdas e conflitos. Filho de atores itinerantes, ficou órfão antes de completar 3 anos de idade por conta do falecimento de sua mãe e do sumiço sem explicação de seu pai. Apesar de ter sido adotado por uma família abastada de Virgínia, cultivou o isolamento e não chegou a herdar a fortuna do casal. Apesar da trajetória tumultuada, revelou um talento indescritível para a escrita, criando um estilo de contos que revolucionaram a literatura mundial. Edgar Allan Poe faleceu em 7 de outubro de 1849, aos 40 anos.
