Clive Staples Lewis nasceu na Irlanda, em 1898. Em 1954, tornou-se professor de Literatura Medieval e Renascentista em Cambridge. Foi ateu durante muitos anos e se converteu em 1929. Essa experiência o ajudou a entender não somente a indiferença como também a indisposição de aceitar a religião; e, como autor cristão, com sua mente excepcionalmente lógica e brilhante e seu estilo vivo e lúcido, ele foi incomparável. Suas obras são conhecidas, em tradução, por milhões de pessoas no mundo inteiro. A abolição do homem, Cartas de um diabo a seu aprendiz, Cristianismo puro e simples e Os quatro amores são apenas alguns de seus bestsellers.
