Smith, Adam

ADAM SMITH, economista e filósofo escocês, nasceu em Kirkcaldy, em 1723. A riqueza das nações é a primeira obra-prima de política econômica. Estudou em Glasgow e Oxford. A partir de 1748 passa a fazer parte do brilhante grupo de Edimburgo, que incluía David Hume, John Howe, Hugh Blair, William Robertson, entre outros.

Em 1751, torna-se professor de lógica em Glasgow, passando mais tarde para a cadeira de filosofia moral. Em 1759, publica Teoria dos sentimentos morais. Em 1776, transfere-se para Londres e, no mesmo ano, publica Investigação sobre a natureza e as causas da riqueza das nações. Sua obra inclui ensaios sobre a formação das línguas, a história da astronomia, física e lógica clássicas e artes. Faleceu em Edimburgo, em 1790.
