This is the fourth volume of a four-volume set offering up-to-date information fundamental to making paper, for those in that chain of industries, which travels from forest to end product. Coverage begins where volume 3 left off, moving from the chemistry to the physics of paper. Twelve chapters discuss physical properties of paper during pressing and drying, interactions with moisture and the effect on mechanical properties, interactions with light and determination of optical properties, dry-strength and wet-strength chemicals, physical properties of the paper surface for printing and for packaging materials, laminate theories for papermakers, and mathematical modeling and analysis of converting and end use. The editors and the contributors are based in Sweden, and the publication of this and the other three volumes was made possible by a grant awarded to the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.
